Learn to sew baby clothes using knit jersey fabric with us on a full day workshop in the Crafty Studio!

This full day class is ideal for beginners to sewing jersey fabrics. You will make a super cute set including a top, baby grow or sleep shirt using the versatile Pick and Mix pattern and Leggings using the Lightening Leggings pattern, both by Waves and Wild and suitable for sizes 0-4 years. This is a great first jersey fabric project and a lovely introduction to sewing babywear.

The class will be led by Zareen, our resident babywear expert, with Crafty Sew and So Founder, Sarah on hand to help too!

We'll start at the very beginning with a full run through what equipment you need and how to set up the machine and your workspace ready to sew.

We'll help you create your first stretch stitches and over the course of the day you will construct your first jersey fabric garment which will equip you with key skills you need for your next sewing projects!

What will you make in the class?

We'll be using the tried and tested Pick and Mix Pattern by Waves and Wild to make a top, baby grow or sleep shirt in this class and using the Lightening Leggings Pattern to make co-ordinating leggings or shorts.

You will find the measurements charts for all Waves and Wild patterns here.

You can make any variation of the pattern. We recommend the envelope neck top or sleep shirt for beginners.

Starting with your cut out paper pattern, which we will send via email as a PDF and ask you to print and prepare ahead of the class, we will help you cut out your fabric using the pattern and sharing tips for getting the best use out of the fabric and cutting stretchy fabrics.

Once your fabric is cut out we'll show you how to construct your garment step by step.

What is included:

  • 1.5m Cotton jersey fabric * - if you book at least 7 days ahead of the class, we can send this out to you before the class so you can pre-wash it. Alternatively, you can choose to bring your own fabric.
  • 10cm strip of contrast rib or cotton jersey for bindings
  • Your pattern - this will be emailed to you as a PDF to print and assemble at home
  • Elastic as required
  • Threads, equipment and sewing machines are all provided

* Choose from the following fabrics:

We will choose a coordinating or contrasting single jersey or rib for your bindings.

You also have the option to bring your own materials. You will need to make sure you bring the materials listed above.

Some preparation before the class will be required. You will need access to a printer to print the pattern.

What will I need to bring?

Your printed, assembled and cut out pattern.

You can choose to use our studio machines or bring your own machine.

You may use an overlocker (we have 4 available) if you have previous experience of using one or have attended an intro to overlocking class previously. We will not have time to teach you how to use an overlocker from the beginning in this class but we will be happy to tailor our teaching to help you use the overlocker to make the garment if you have used one before and are familiar with the basics.

You will also need to bring:
  • A packed lunch or money to buy lunch at a local cafe or shops - we have a microwave and a fridge you can use.
