DIY Patchwork Christmas Stocking | Quilt-As-You-Go Tutorial
Looking to create a festive, handmade Christmas stocking? This quilt-as-you-go method is a brilliant way to combine your favourite fabric scraps into a one-of-a-kind decoration. Follow these simple steps to stitch up your stocking in no time!
Materials You'll Need:
- Christmas fabric scraps (variety of colours and prints)
- Stocking template - Download here
- Batting (thin cotton or polyester wadding)
- Backing fabric (for the inside lining)
- Sewing machine and basic sewing kit
- Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat (optional but super helpful)
- Pins or clips
Step 1: Prepare Your Template and Fabrics
- Download onto paper or cardboard. Cut it out for easy tracing.
- Cut your fabrics into strips or squares about 2-3 inches wide. No need to be exact—wonky is charming!
- Trace the pattern onto the wadding using the stocking template. You’ll need one piece for the front and one for the back, make sure they are mirror images.
- Cut out two stocking panels from your backing fabric.
Step 2: Quilt-As-You-Go – Front Panel
- Place your batting stocking piece on a flat surface.
- Select your first fabric strip and position it diagonally across the top of the batting (right side up).
- Take a second strip and place it right side down on top of the first, aligning the edges.
- Sew along the aligned edge with a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Press the fabric open and repeat with the next strip, working your way down the stocking until the entire batting is covered.
Top Tip: Vary the widths and colours of your strips for a fun, patchwork look!
Step 3: Assemble the Stocking
- Once the front panel is fully covered, trim the excess fabric around the stocking shape.
- Repeat the same quilt-as-you-go process for the back panel, or use a single piece of fabric for a quicker option.
- Sew each outer panel to a backing piece at the straight edge, right sides together.
- Press the pieces apart, and place the panels right sides together and pin or clip in place.
- Sew around the edges of the stocking with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a gap 10cm wide in the lining open.
- Turn the stocking right side out and press it flat.
- Push the lining in to the outer stocking and press.
Step 3: Admire Your Work!
Congratulations—you’ve just made a beautiful quilt-as-you-go Christmas stocking! 🎉 Hang it up, fill it with treats, and enjoy the festive vibes.
