As the cooler weather looms I'm already planning how I'm going to stay warm!  This easy ear warmer tutorial will be just the thing for my morning commute.

You will need-

  • 25cm of heavy weight jersey, sweatshirting or ponte roma work really well.
  • An overlocker or sewing machine and basic sewing kit
  • Fabric scissors

Step 1

Measure your head around your hairline, this is where the warmer is going to sit.  Cut a piece of jersey the same length by 25cm wide.  You want it to have negative ease so that it sits snuggly on your head and doesn't fall off.

Sew using a zig zag stitch or an overlocker the headband piece in to a long tube, sewing the two long edges together, with the right sides of the fabric together. Use a 1cm seam allowance.  Turn the right way out and put to the side.

Step 2

Cut another piece of jersey, approximately 12cm x 12cm square.  Sew this in to a tube, turn the right way out and then sew the two raw edges together in to a loop.

Then slide this loop on to the longer tube of fabric.

Step 3

Sew or overlock the long tube of fabric closed at the raw edges to make a loop.  sew it so that the visible seams are in the centre of the headband on the side where you are sewing.

Move the smaller loop of fabric over the line of stitching on the larger loop, to cover it over.  Make sure the stitching of both loops are on the inside.

and Voila! Finished.  Pop it on and have cosy ears all winter long.  This is such a simple make, it's a great one to batch sew and give as gifts!
