My First Workshop of the Year
Teaching Beginners to Sew at Attenborough Arts Centre
Last weekend, I ran a beginner’s sewing workshop at the Attenborough Arts Centre in Leicester. Ten participants joined me for the day to learn how to set up and use a sewing machine while making three wonderfully simple projects: a needle case, a cushion cover, and a tote bag.
From Hesitant to Confident
For many attendees, this was their first proper experience using a sewing machine. Some had tried one briefly at school, but most were starting fresh. There were a few nerves at the beginning, but as we got going, the room filled with laughter and conversation. Step by step, they tackled threading their machines and testing out stitches. By the end of the day, everyone had completed their projects and felt much more at ease with sewing.
A Fun and Supportive Atmosphere
One of the best parts of an in-person workshop is the sense of community. The bright, open space at Attenborough Arts Centre made for a relaxed setting, and it was great to see people helping and encouraging each other as they sewed. It wasn’t just about learning—it was about enjoying the process and having fun along the way.
Each participant picked their own fabric from my collection, choosing colours and prints that suited their style or home. Seeing everyone’s projects come together in unique ways was a highlight of the day.
The Joy of Hands-On Learning
There’s something special about learning in person. Watching someone go from hesitant to confident, seeing their excitement as they finish a project they never thought they could make—those moments are why I love teaching workshops. The feedback was fantastic, and I hope to run more sessions at the centre later this year.
If you’ve been thinking about learning to sew but aren’t sure where to start, workshops like this are a great way to dive in. You’ll leave with new skills, handmade projects, and maybe even a new hobby!
