I initially designed the simple tee pattern as a solution to a problem. I needed a simple, easy to sew pattern to help new sewists conquer their fear of sewing jersey! The Simple Tee pattern included several essential jersey sewing techniques like stretching on a neckband and hemming jersey fabric, plus some nice design features like the curved hem and flattering, body-skimming fit.

We used this pattern for many years in our workshops and pretty much everyone who made one went on to make more!  So, we developed the pattern to include three different necklines, three different sleeve finishes and three hem variations. But, we kept the same great fit you love.

So whether you choose the v-neck, long sleeve, curved hem or the scoop neck, cuffed sleeve, tie hem, there will always be another way to sew this pattern over and over. We’re sure it will become one of the hardest working patterns in your Handmade Wardrobe!

TUTORIALS AND RESOURCES

This pattern really is a fantastic way to start working with jersey stretch fabrics. Our blog features a great guide to sewing jersey fabrics. We’ll also be sharing tutorials and videos with you covering specific techniques to develop and fine-tune your jersey sewing skills.

CHOOSING FABRICS

The pattern is designed specifically for stretch and jersey fabrics so you can choose from a fantastic range at Crafty Sew & So.  Single jersey fabrics are idea as they are light weight and have a nice drape, but we have also made samples in stretch velour, scuba and true knit. The simplicity of the pattern give you lots of opportunities to try new fabrics with confidence.

Neckline Variations

The crew neck is a high neck. We've included lots of notches to help you match up and stretch on the neckband neatly. We’d recommend this neckline for beginners.

The scoop neck is a wider more scoop variation. The neckband can be made in a contrast fabric but always try to make sure all fabrics combined have the same stretch and return.

The V-neck is a little trickier, but with our clear photo step-by-step guide, and a little practice, you’ll have no trouble creating a neat and precise finish.

Sleeve Variations

The simple grown on sleeve is just long enough to cover the shoulders whilst still looking cute and modern.

The addition of a cuff keeps the t-shirt looking modern and can be added in a contrast fabric.

The long sleeve is a variation I’ve been wanting to create for a long time. And now I have, I love it! I’ll be making a full winter wardrobe of these!

Hemline Variations

The curved hem is longline and easy to wear tucked in or over your jeans - or with our recently launched wrap skirt pattern.

The tied hem is a cute, fun variation.  We’ve made sure the t-shirt front is long enough to keep your body covered when you move and that the ties are substantial enough to be tied loosely or tighter and not look like droopy dog ears whichever way you choose to wear it!

The twist hem is a nod to a trend we just had to include. This variation is designed to be worn a little tighter (so you may wish to size down, rather than up) and it suits fabrics with some weight and substance like polyester peachskin jersey, ponti roma and cotton elastane jersey. It looks really cool styled with high waisted jeans.

SIZING

This pattern is the second in our range to include a new size 9 which will fit up to a 140cm hip. We are really pleased to be able to make our patterns available to a wider audience and we are striving to keep progressing with this.

It is vital when sewing your own clothes to take accurate measurements of your body, and not rely on the sizing you expect to buy on the high street. This is why we’ve switch out the usual sizes (eg, 8-22) for our own system of numbers 1-8. You have to measure yourself to pick your size!

Our size range fits from a waist 66cm or 26" to 109cm or 43".  Check the size chart below to choose the right size for you.  There is 6cm (2.5") ease at the bust.
